NotchIA vs NotchNook: honest comparison 2026
By Axel Courty · May 27, 2026 · 8 min read · macOS 14+
Short answer. NotchNook (lo.cafe, July 2024) and NotchIA are the two most-cited premium notch apps in 2026. NotchNook positions itself as the "Mac Dynamic Island": ultra-polished aesthetics, Notch Tray drag&drop, Live Activities, around $2.99/month or $25 lifetime, available on Setapp. NotchIA is freemium (free-forever Essential, Pro at €2.99/month or €24.99 lifetime), ships in 4 languages (FR/EN/ES/DE), and adds exclusive modules: live AI (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot) and on-device Apple Intelligence Digest. Pricing is nearly identical — the choice depends on your priorities (aesthetics vs AI, English vs multilingual).

Context: why two premium notch apps?
Since the notch arrived on the MacBook Pro 14" and 16" in 2021, then on the MacBook Air in 2024, the notch utility category has grown around several apps. Two dominate the premium tier in 2026: NotchNook, published by lo.cafe since July 2024 and praised by The Verge and MacStories; and NotchIA, an independent French app built by Axel Courty.
These are two independent projects, built separately, by two different publishers. NotchIA is neither a fork nor a clone of NotchNook: both apps were written in parallel in Swift / SwiftUI without any shared code. They share the same category but address different audiences.
This comparison was written by Axel Courty, the developer of NotchIA. I'm flagging my bias upfront: I know NotchIA from the inside. For NotchNook, I rely on its official lo.cafe site, its Setapp listing, and the public reviews (The Verge, MacStories). I also tested NotchNook on my M3 14" MacBook Pro for two weeks before writing this.
NotchNook in a nutshell
NotchNook
~$2.99/month · ~$25 lifetime
NotchNook is a paid macOS application developed by lo.cafe, released in July 2024. It explicitly positions itself as the "Mac Dynamic Island": turning the notch into an interactive surface with iOS-like animations. It ships a Notch Tray (very mature drag&drop file shelf), Live Activities (music, battery, screen, etc.), polished media controls, a quick calendar, and an extremely refined design. Pricing is around $2.99/month (1 device) or $25 lifetime (2 devices). The app is also available in the Setapp bundle.
Strengths: premium aesthetics, perfect Dynamic Island animations, very mature Notch Tray drag&drop, polished Live Activities, Setapp bundle for those already subscribed, glowing reviews (The Verge, MacStories).
Limits: English UI only, no live AI or on-device Apple Intelligence integration, no free tier, primarily Apple Silicon.
NotchIA in a nutshell
NotchIA
Free Essential forever · Pro monthly €2.99/mo · Pro lifetime €24.99
NotchIA is an independent macOS app developed by Axel Courty (sole proprietorship COURTY Axel, RCS Bordeaux 105 093 058, registered 19/05/2026). Current version: 2.8.0 "Wise Owl" released May 15, 2026. It ships 14 native modules: multi-source media with synchronized lyrics, calendar, Focus/Pomodoro, drag-and-drop Shelf, system HUD, AirDrop, Digest (RSS summaries via on-device Apple Intelligence, 2.8.0 exclusive), live AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, GitHub Copilot with 10 states + token tracking), file converter (16 formats, Pro), unlimited clipboard (Pro), auto multi-display switching.
Strengths: free-forever Essential tier, 4 languages (FR/EN/ES/DE), exclusive AI and Apple Intelligence modules, Apple Silicon AND Intel support, direct email support with Axel.
Limits: aesthetics slightly less polished than NotchNook on some Dynamic Island animations, younger project (but regular updates), requires macOS 15.0+ and macOS 26 for the Apple Intelligence Digest module.

This table doesn't crown a winner — it lists the axes where NotchIA and NotchNook diverge. The deciding criterion depends on your profile: Dynamic Island aesthetics vs AI cockpit, English vs multilingual, immediate subscription vs free trial tier.
When to choose NotchNook
NotchNook is the right choice in several typical cases:
- You want the most polished Dynamic Island look on Mac. That's NotchNook's central promise and it delivers: precise animations, smooth transitions, very iOS-like attention to detail.
- You drag and drop a lot around the notch. The Notch Tray is one of NotchNook's most mature features: drop a file, grab it from another app — fast and clean.
- You already subscribe to Setapp. NotchNook is part of the Setapp bundle, which means you're already paying for it if you pay for Setapp.
- You're comfortable in English. The UI and documentation are English-only.
- You don't code with an IDE AI. If Claude Code, Codex and Copilot aren't part of your daily flow, the missing live AI module isn't a deal-breaker.
NotchNook is an excellent product, praised by tech press (The Verge, MacStories), with a team (lo.cafe) maintaining a strong release cadence. Choosing it is never a bad choice — just a different one.
When to choose NotchIA
NotchIA is a better fit in these cases:
- You code daily with Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex or GitHub Copilot. NotchIA is the only macOS notch app that shows the live state of these three IDE agents, with 10 states (Compiling, Terminal, Searching, Reading, Writing, etc.) and token tracking. NotchNook doesn't have this module.
- You want to try before you pay. The Essential tier is free forever, no credit card, and already includes media control, calendar, HUD and customization. Then you decide whether Pro adds enough.
- You want on-device Apple Intelligence. The Digest module (2.8.0 exclusive) consumes your RSS feeds and produces a summary via local Apple Foundation models, 100% on-device, no third-party server calls.
- You use macOS in French, Spanish or German. NotchIA ships in 4 languages, which materially changes the experience for non-English speakers.
- You still run an Intel Mac. NotchIA supports both Apple Silicon and Intel; NotchNook primarily targets Apple Silicon.
- You want a lifetime purchase for 2 Macs. €24.99 one-time gives all Pro features forever on 2 Macs, updates included.
Verdict: not strict competitors, complementary by use case
NotchNook and NotchIA don't target the exact same user. NotchNook is the default pick if you want the most refined Dynamic Island look on Mac, are comfortable in English, and don't need live AI. NotchIA is the better fit if you code with Claude Code / Codex / Copilot, want on-device Apple Intelligence, use macOS in French / Spanish / German, or need a free tier to try first.
Pricing is nearly identical: ~$25 vs €24.99 lifetime, ~$3/month vs €2.99/month. The difference isn't price — it's scope and philosophy. If you're hesitating, install NotchIA's free Essential tier for two weeks, then test NotchNook via its trial or Setapp. You'll know which one fits your real-world usage.
The macOS ecosystem wins when multiple projects push the notch utility category — each one pulls the other forward, and the end user gets more options.
FAQ: choosing between NotchIA and NotchNook
Are NotchIA and NotchNook the same app?
No. NotchIA and NotchNook are two separate macOS applications built independently by two different publishers. NotchNook is published by lo.cafe and positioned as a Mac Dynamic Island. NotchIA is developed by Axel Courty (France) and presents itself as an interactive cockpit with live AI and on-device Apple Intelligence. They share the notch utility category but share neither codebase nor team.
Which is cheaper, NotchIA or NotchNook?
Pricing is nearly identical. NotchNook costs about $2.99/month or $25 lifetime. NotchIA Pro costs €2.99/month or €24.99 lifetime. The key difference: NotchIA offers a free-forever Essential tier with media control, calendar, HUD and customization, with no payment required.
Does NotchNook have AI features?
No. NotchNook focuses on Dynamic Island aesthetics, Live Activities, the Notch Tray (file shelf), and polished media controls. NotchIA is the only macOS notch app that integrates Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex and GitHub Copilot live (10 states + token tracking) and ships an on-device Apple Intelligence Digest module that summarizes your RSS feeds via local Apple Foundation models.
Can I use NotchIA and NotchNook at the same time?
Technically yes, but it's not recommended. Both apps take control of the notch area and produce visual conflicts (overlapping animations, duplicated HUDs, colliding keyboard shortcuts). The most efficient approach is to test each for two weeks and keep the one that fits your usage best.
Is NotchIA a clone of NotchNook?
No. NotchIA is an independent macOS application written from scratch in Swift / SwiftUI by Axel Courty. It shares the notch utility category with NotchNook but does not derive from its code, and takes a different approach: live AI module, on-device Apple Intelligence, UI in 4 languages, free-forever tier. NotchNook (lo.cafe, July 2024) and NotchIA are two parallel, separate projects.
Which one is better for music control?
NotchNook is often praised for its Dynamic Island look on media controls (animated visualizer, perfect transitions). NotchIA offers an equivalent multi-source player (Apple Music, Spotify, etc.) with synchronized lyrics and animated album art. For pure aesthetics, NotchNook has a slight edge; for synchronized lyrics and multi-source, NotchIA is very complete.
