NotchIA vs Alcove: 2026 comparison
By Axel Courty · May 27, 2026 · 8 min read · macOS 14+
Short answer. Alcove and NotchIA are two macOS apps that work with the MacBook notch but with opposite philosophies. Alcove (alcove.app) is a paid app focused on an aesthetic Dynamic Island with animations praised by MacStories in December 2024. NotchIA is freemium (Essential free, Pro lifetime 24,99 €) and offers a full cockpit of 14 modules, live AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, GitHub Copilot), on-device Apple Intelligence Digest and 4 languages (FR/EN/ES/DE). Alcove wins on aesthetics; NotchIA wins on functional breadth.

Context: two apps, two promises
Since 2021, the notch on the 14"/16" MacBook Pro — and then the MacBook Air in 2024 — has spawned an entire category of macOS apps called notch utilities. The third-party comparison at apps.deals lists the main players: Alcove, NotchNook, Boring Notch, Notchmeister. NotchIA joined the same category in 2024.
Two approaches face off. Alcove bet on pure beauty: reproducing the iPhone Dynamic Island experience on Mac, with animations of a quality praised by MacStories in December 2024 (« Excellent Notch Utility with Beautiful Animations »). NotchIA took the opposite bet: turn the notch into a productivity cockpit, with 14 native modules and exclusive AI integrations.
This comparison was written by Axel Courty, creator of NotchIA. I therefore disclose my bias from the start: I know NotchIA from the inside. For Alcove, I rely on the official site, the MacStories review and my own testing on an M3 MacBook Pro. Claims about Alcove are verifiable via these sources.
Alcove in a nutshell
Alcove
Paid — one-time purchase
Alcove is a paid macOS application focused on reproducing the iPhone Dynamic Island on Mac. Its core: an animated heads-up display that shows, around or below the notch, currently playing music (with album art animations), local weather, battery level, charger state, AirDrop, and a few system notifications. Developed by a small team, the app was praised by MacStories in late 2024 for the quality of its animations and the elegance of its design.
Strengths: animations of a quality rare on macOS, very polished aesthetics, visual experience close to iPhone, lightweight focused app, editor-grade polish.
Limits: intentionally narrow feature scope (no AI, no clipboard, no Focus), minimalist customization, no long-term free version, English as primary language.
NotchIA in a nutshell
NotchIA
Essential free forever · Pro monthly 2,99 €/mo · Pro lifetime 24,99 €
NotchIA is a proprietary macOS app developed by Axel Courty (sole proprietorship COURTY Axel, RCS Bordeaux 105 093 058). Current version: 2.8.0 « Wise Owl » released May 15, 2026. It offers 14 native modules: multi-source Media with synced lyrics (lrclib, 26 languages), Calendar, Focus / Pomodoro, drag-and-drop Shelf, system HUD, AirDrop, Digest (RSS summaries via on-device Apple Intelligence, 2.8.0 exclusive), live AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, GitHub Copilot with 10 states), File converter (16 formats, Pro), unlimited Clipboard (Pro).
Strengths: functional breadth (14 modules vs ~5 for Alcove), AI and Apple Intelligence exclusives, free Essential tier for life, 4 languages (FR/EN/ES/DE), 5 theme presets + configurable tabs, 24,99 € lifetime purchase.
Limits: less polished animations than Alcove (priority given to information density), requires macOS 15+ for most modules and macOS 26 for Apple Intelligence Digest, visually denser app.

This table doesn't say one app is better than the other — it lists the axes on which they diverge. Alcove wins hands down on animations and simplicity. NotchIA wins on functional scope and AI integrations.
When to choose Alcove
Alcove is the right choice in these typical cases:
- You want the most beautiful Dynamic Island animation on Mac. This is the axis where Alcove has no rival: the fluidity of transitions, the album art rendering, the battery micro-animations are at a level rare on macOS.
- You want a simple, focused, lightweight app. No layered settings, no 14 modules to configure: Alcove does few things, but does them very well.
- Your needs are limited to Now Playing + weather + battery. That's exactly the scope Alcove covers, with a higher level of elegance.
- You're willing to pay for a one-time purchase app. No subscription, but also no long-term free version: pay once and you're set.
- You prefer aesthetics over information density. Alcove favors « beautiful and simple » over « rich and dense ». If that matches your sensibility, it's the app for you.
Alcove is an excellent product with a deliberate stance. Choosing Alcove is never a bad choice — it's just a different one.
When to choose NotchIA
NotchIA fits better in these cases:
- You want live AI in the notch. NotchIA is today the only macOS notch app that displays the real-time state of Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex and GitHub Copilot, with 10 states (Compiling, Terminal, Searching, Reading, Writing, etc.) and token consumption in plain view. If you code with Claude Code or Codex daily, this integration changes your relationship to the terminal.
- You want on-device Apple Intelligence. The Digest module (2.8.0 exclusive) consumes your RSS feeds and produces a summary via local Apple Intelligence models, 100% on-device, never sent to a third-party server.
- You want a free tier for life. NotchIA Essential stays free permanently. You can test the app over time with no commitment, then upgrade to Pro lifetime (24,99 €) if the advanced modules appeal to you.
- You use macOS in French, Spanish or German. NotchIA is translated into 4 languages, which genuinely changes the experience for a non-English user.
- You want productivity modules. Focus / Pomodoro, unlimited clipboard, drag-and-drop Shelf, file converter (16 formats): these are functions Alcove doesn't offer.
- You want synced lyrics. NotchIA shows lyrics via lrclib in 26 languages, in sync with the playing track. No equivalent module on Alcove.
Verdict: aesthetics vs breadth
The two apps don't target exactly the same user profile. Alcove wins hands down on animations and the beauty of the Dynamic Island experience. In 2026, it's probably the most beautiful implementation of a notch utility on macOS. NotchIA wins on functional breadth: 14 modules, live AI, Apple Intelligence Digest, lyrics, clipboard, Focus, converter — functions that aren't in Alcove's scope.
If you're design-sensitive and your notch usage is limited to Now Playing, weather and battery, Alcove will likely be more compelling. If you code with Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex, want to consume your RSS feeds via Apple Intelligence, or speak French, Spanish or German, NotchIA is more likely to stick. Still on the fence? Start with NotchIA Essential (free), then evaluate Alcove in parallel. Two weeks will tell you which matches your usage.
The macOS ecosystem wins when several projects explore this category with different stances — one pushes aesthetics, the other functionality.
FAQ: choosing between Alcove and NotchIA
Are Alcove and NotchIA in the same category?
Yes and no. Both are macOS notch utilities, but Alcove focuses on an aesthetic Dynamic Island (music, weather, battery with polished animations) while NotchIA offers a full cockpit of 14 modules including live AI (Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, GitHub Copilot) and on-device Apple Intelligence Digest.
Which app has the most beautiful animations?
Alcove clearly wins on animations. MacStories praised it in December 2024 for its polished animations (« Excellent Notch Utility with Beautiful Animations »). NotchIA bets more on functional breadth than on aesthetic transition perfection.
Is Alcove free?
No. Alcove is a paid application (one-time purchase, check pricing on alcove.app). NotchIA offers a freemium model: Essential is free for life, Pro costs 2,99 €/month or 24,99 € lifetime.
Which one should I pick for the MacBook notch?
Pick Alcove if you want the best Dynamic Island experience with flawless animations and a simple product. Pick NotchIA if you want 14 native modules, live AI (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot), Apple Intelligence Digest, a free tier and a 4-language UI.
What are the macOS requirements?
Alcove requires macOS 14 or later. NotchIA requires macOS 15+ for most modules and macOS 26 for the on-device Apple Intelligence Digest module.
Can I install both Alcove and NotchIA at the same time?
Technically yes, but it's not recommended: both apps take control of the notch zone, which produces visual conflicts and duplicate system HUDs. Picking one and testing it for two weeks before potentially switching is more effective.
